The Environmental Challenge

At my high school graduation I gave a speech titled "The Environmental Challenge." Long story about why that was the title, but basically it is a story about procrastination and having to make due with your mistakes.

We had our own environmental challenge last night. I loathe the consumption of paper towels. I always have them though because there are occasions (maybe twice a month) that only a paper towel will do. I opt for kitchen cloths that get washed frequently. Al has learned to use the cloths when I am around and when I am not he goes for the paper towels. I usually pretend that I don't notice how quickly we go through a roll. Last night, I walked in the kitchen a minute to soon and the discussion began. We got stuck on our lack of knowledge of energy production.

"How much energy does it take it to make a paper towel?" Al insists that they are made from paper scraps anyway.

"How much energy does it take to wash a cloth in the washing machine and then clean the water at a treatment center?" I insist that the water can be reused but the tree that was cut down can't be.

The jury is still out. Our time would be better used discussing how we are going to get all of the crayon and fingerprints off our flat painted walls or what is that brown stuff that keeps growing behind the kid's toilet and is bleach resistant, or when do the scissors get to come out of hiding.

Sorry again for our mishap at our last visit to your house. Though I didn't personally witness it, I'm sure many paper towels were being used downstairs to clean up the blood while I was getting it all over my shirt upstairs! I can reimburse you for some if you'd like. ;) Or better yet, maybe I should go plant a tree.

I am also against frequent paper towel usage, although I don't know the answer to the debate. The same argument could be used for cloth diapers, I guess, but one that one, I think I'll just ruin the environment.

P.S. That sounds like a mighty fun birthday party!
